Why your oven might not match
Home ovens often run 15–25 °F (10–15 °C) hotter or cooler than the dial says, and the temperature swings as the heating element cycles on and off. An inexpensive oven thermometer on the middle rack shows what you are really baking at. Let the oven preheat fully, usually 15 to 20 minutes, before the food goes in.
Questions bakers ask
What is 350 °F in Celsius?
350 °F is 176.7 °C. Recipes and oven dials round it to 180 °C, which is gas mark 4, or 160 °C in a fan oven.
What is 180 °C in Fahrenheit?
180 °C is 356 °F. US recipes treat it as 350 °F.
How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?
Subtract 32, multiply by 5, then divide by 9. For example, (400 − 32) × 5 ÷ 9 = 204.4 °C, which you would set as 200 °C. To go the other way, multiply Celsius by 9, divide by 5 and add 32.
How much lower should a fan or convection oven be?
A fan moves hot air around the food, so it cooks faster. UK recipes usually reduce the temperature by 20 °C for a fan oven. US guidance for convection ovens is 25 °F lower, or the same temperature for a shorter time. Check early the first time you bake something.
What temperature is gas mark 4?
Gas mark 4 is 350 °F or 180 °C, the most common setting for cakes and cookies. Gas mark 6 is 400 °F (200 °C) and gas mark 2 is 300 °F (150 °C).
